In my first career as a professional musical theater performer, I was introduced to several different movement systems, such as dance, aerobics, and strength training. When I injured my back during a performance, I found Pilates and discovered that the method works like an owner’s manual for your body. I was so amazed at how Pilates gave me the tools to understand my body so that I could protect it and not get hurt again that I began extensive training in Pilates and other forms of exercise, including yoga, body conditioning, and group fitness. In 2006, I switched careers and started teaching Pilates full-time, including leading Teacher Training courses for would-be Pilates teachers.


I moved to New Hampshire from my native Austria in 2008 and saw the need for a studio that offered Pilates the way it was intended to be taught. That’s when I opened Concord Pilates. Explaining the precision of our everyday movements and posture — and seeing someone light up because they finally have an answer for what is not working in their bodies or why they might be in pain — is one of the reasons I wake up every day. I am devoted to helping my students get to know their bodies, figure out their strengths, and find the areas that, when worked on intelligently, will make them feel great. It makes me incredibly happy when I get to work with someone who is curious, willing to listen and try things differently. When I see a client enjoy their workout and feel better because of it, I know I've done a good job.

I’ve studied and trained in both Austria and the US. I received my Pilates training through Polestar Pilates and Balanced Body and I am certified through the Pilates Method Alliance. I also completed a 200-hr Yoga Certification through YogaWorks. I love combining all my movement training to create personalized programs that remind people that working out can be easy!

I've further founded PilatesKnowledge.com, a page dedicated to learning more about the method and understanding it on deeper and deeper levels, as well as MovementClassroom.com, where I offer online courses for people with various injuries, strains and pain, that help them find a movement routine to feel better.

What motivates me: 

My students’ curiosity. When I see that someone is really eager to get answers to their questions, I get fired up. You can tell, because I start to sing when I have a good time. Yes, I occasionally sing in classes.

 

My top fitness tip is:
You must keep the faith in your own power to achieve your goal. If you give up, no-one, not the best instructor, not the best partner - can help you get there. But if you believe, everyone can contribute to your success. Be a believer!

My fitness inspiration is:
Joseph Pilates, who was creative, an innovator, stubborn (he didn’t let anyone try and tell him that his method didn’t work), a fighter (he survived 2 wars), entrepreneur, and ahead of his time. And he was an immigrant just like me so I understand his drive and work ethic.

My mission in every class is:

To explain to my students with simple words how to move from their center with less effort and more efficiency. I hope to inspire my students to move in a way that makes them feel great about themselves.

 

My biggest challenge is:

Patience. I wish I could put all of my ideas and plans to work immediately. I have a very creative mind. I love to see people quickly get the results they want from the exercises we’ve developed together. Paradoxically, I'm patient with others, but not so much with myself. 


My personal fitness achievement is:
Being healthier now than ever before. And the same will be true tomorrow and the day after that. The better it gets the better it gets.

When I’m not at work I am: 

in Nature. I might be relaxing with a good book or a cup of coffee, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, or hanging out at the beach or lake. Water relaxes me like nothing else.

I have been practicing Pilates since 2010 and completed my Pilates Mat certification at Concord Pilates in 2014. I am a former competitive Master Rower and an avid exerciser. I enjoy the balance of participating in diverse athletic activities. In addition to Pilates I incorporate power walking, indoor cycling, and swimming to my weekly routine.

In 2015 I learned that I had osteoporosis. The diagnosis has been a positive life changing event for me. And, it has also led me to add new exercise activities which I am enjoying greatly. I have added three weight training sessions to my weekly routine. I now also practice Buff Bones® and recently became a Licensed Buff Bones® Instructor. Buff Bones® is a medically endorsed system of movement that strengthens bones and balance. It’s a great workout for anyone.

Since starting my certification training here, I have embraced the Pilates philosophy at Concord Pilates as initiated by Joseph Pilates and integrated by studio owner Mara Sievers. I strive to make my classes a reflection of how these two visionaries approach Pilates, exercise, and movement. Now I’m very excited to instruct Buff Bones® classes at Concord Pilates. Clients who have osteopenia or osteoporosis and who are looking for a challenging yet safe Pilates workout can add Buff Bones® to their exercise routine. I look forward to bringing these benefits to the clients of Concord Pilates.

 

What motivates me:

My strong desire to age gracefully and in good health.

 

My top fitness tips:

Variety. Cross train.  One thing does not do it all.


My fitness inspiration is:

Feeling good physically, mentally and emotionally. 


My biggest challenge is:

Good posture. Push ups and reverse plank and fully extending my right arm.


My personal fitness achievement is:

Teaching here at Concord Pilates.

When I am not at work:
When I am not at work (either in the studio or at my day job at NHTI, Concord's Community College) I am walking in downtown Concord... catching a flick at Red River Theaters, sipping a brew at The Barley House, swimming or spinning at the YMCA or enjoying a romantic dinner with husband, Jim, at Angelina's.

My original degree was in Animal Medical Technology. I went back to school for Medical Technology, finding the scientific piece of what makes our bodies work, (or not work!) fascinating.  I became interested in bodywork when my horse started to have unexplained bouts of colic and lameness that conventional  Veterinary Medicine was unable to diagnose.

My fascination for whole body health went to a new level with every modality I learned.  I received my license in massage therapy in 2005, went on to additionally certify in Myofascial Mobilization & Soft Tissue Release and Neuromuscular Therapy, and am currently in the certification process in Craniosacral Therapy.  Corrective exercise is out of the scope of practice for massage therapists, so I decided to get my personal trainer certificate as an added piece to my massage practice. I first did IMAP certification, which is personal training designed specifically for massage therapists. That led to certifications in personal training, corrective exercise, and women’s fitness with the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

The way I found Concord Pilates was a total synchronicity. My daughter asked me if I wanted to take a Pilates class with her, and we came to Concord Pilates. Earlier in the year, I had trashed my hamstring (doing something stupid that I advise everyone else not to), and it really was taking a lot of time to resolve itself.  After the first Pilates class with Mara, my hamstring started to improve. I became a Pilates junkie and went to every class that I could get to.

I began using some of the exercises both on and off my massage table with my patients, and they loved it. When I found out that Mara taught a teacher training  program at Concord Pilates (and it was even conveniently located two blocks from my massage office!) I approached her about taking her class. She showed me the curriculum, and it was the missing link to all the other pieces of my practice. Mara’s knowledge of structure, anatomy, and functional movement is very extensive and  has been an invaluable resource to me. I started the mat certification in October of 2015, finished in February 2016, and am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of a studio of this caliber.

What motivates me:

Doing everything I can to be as happy, healthy and pain-free as possible, and to help  those of all ages to do the same. Before I became a massage therapist and personal trainer, I was a lab technician for over 30 years. I was amazed by the 70- to 90-year-old patients who appeared to be very much younger. Their secret?  They all had a great attitude, were physically and socially active, and loved life. In sharp contrast, there were patients as young as their 20’s who had totally neglected themselves. Not only did they have major health problems,  they had aged prematurely and severely compromised both their longevity and overall quality of life. Two things I know to be true and hope to share with everyone – If you don’t have your health, all aspects of your life are negatively impacted- AND - it’s NEVER too late to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

My top fitness tips:

The best exercise? The one that you actually do and love doing. We all have our favorites and our not-so-favorites and tend to fall off the fitness wagon if we don’t enjoy what we are doing. How to get the greatest benefit from what you love to do? Use Pilates as the foundation. You will do everything that you love to do better!

My fitness inspiration is:

Johanna Quass. At 90 years young, she is a German gymnast who still competes and personifies the saying  “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are right.” Starting to train again at age 57, she is still going strong and amazes everyone who watches. (Catch her on You-Tube, she is truly inspiring)

My mission in every class:
That by the end of class, your body will know that is has worked, you will leave feeling better than when you came,  you will take the class home with you and move better and more mindfully in your daily life, and that you can’t wait till the next class!

My biggest challenge is:
Hmmmm, besides technology and writing bios? I would say deciding which new class I want to take next. I truly am a workshop junkie and a bit of a dork about it all.

My personal fitness achievement is:
To date, completing the Pilates teacher training program.  Looking ahead, I want to be Johanna Quass when I grow up!

When I’m not at work I am: 
In the summer, sailing on the Maine coast and spending as much time  outdoors or on the water as possible.  The rest of the year, wishing it was summer!

Pilates Teacher


I have always been active – walking, biking, aerobics but I realized my strength was lacking and in 2002, I turned to Pilates. Over the years I have studied Stott Pilates, Polestar Pilates and several variations in between at studios all over the country and in private sessions. My main focus for all of those years was practice on the Reformer.

I came to Concord Pilates 3 years ago for private sessions and Mara convinced me to try group equipment classes as well as mat classes. Concord Pilates has taught me more about the movement and my body more than any of the other studios I have been in. The method here is to be precise and to know what YOUR body can do. It’s a very different approach from many other studios.

The teacher training program with Mara has been comprehensive – the anatomy of how our bodies move fascinates me. Knowing the exercises and how the bones and muscles work together to create movement is a very complex process and I enjoy the challenge of putting what I have learned into practice.

What motivates me:

An overall sense of well-being. When things are out of balance they can go off track quickly. If I keep at exercise, it’s easier to eat better and sleep better. Everything is connected. The healthiest older people I know keep moving and are mentally and physically active. I love seeing people with a joie de vivre as they age.


My top fitness tips:

Consistency. Keep at it, the more you practice the better you will be. With consistent practice you will feel better and find you are able to things you couldn’t before and you will become stronger.


My fitness inspiration is:

When I see a student able to do something they have struggled with before. It’s a great feeling to master a movement that was once so difficult. 

 

My mission in every class is:
To help everyone feel better and move better during their everyday activities and maybe we can have a little fun while challenging our bodies.

My biggest challenge is:
Balance in every aspect. Not just the One-Leg Balance, but balance between work, home and life in general.


My personal fitness achievement is:

Oh, lots of things! Taking the Teacher Training Courses in both Mat and Apparatus here at Concord Pilates, I have learned so much and have been able to challenge myself to perform exercises that seemed impossible once upon a time.


When I’m not at work I am: 

Working! My husband and I have an import business that is a new startup, so there is a lot of work to be done. I also like to read, knit, garden and drink a lot of espresso.

I moved from Portland, ME to New Hampshire 4 years ago. Over the last few years, I have enjoyed trying different workout programs. I’m loving learning more about Pilates! I like focusing on the precise movements and love how I feel after each class!






What motivates me:

I love seeing progress! Even little changes in strength push me to keep going.


My top fitness tips:

Find something you really enjoy doing that also helps improve fitness.

My fitness inspiration is:

I love hearing people’s success stories! Seeing how their hard work has paid off is very inspirational to me.

My biggest challenge is:

My love for nachos :-)

My personal fitness achievement is:

Gaining more strength has allowed me to try new activities with more confidence.

When I’m not at work I am: 

Hanging out with family and friends. My husband and I love to travel to new places and spend as much time in warm weather as possible.

I was born and raised in Concord and still have family ties in the area. I've studied veterinary medicine, managed a vet clinic for 10 years, spent some time as a stay at home mom, sought and gained my real estate license and currently own and operate a small family business in Salem, New Hampshire. I started coming to Concord Pilates after experiencing a reoccurring low back injury from my physically demanding work. After three years of working out my "kinks", I decided to pursue Mara's teacher training program. Mara inspires and encourages me to be my best, healthiest self and I hope that I can do the same for each of you.



What motivates me:

My motivation is maintaining my health and taking care of my "temple" gifted to me by my higher power. 'We are the architect of our own bodies". -Joe Pilates

My top fitness tip:

Honor your body and listen to the cues it is giving. These clues and cues are the map for your individual journey and figuring out what your body needs.

My fitness inspiration is:

Mara Sievers and her depth of knowledge of the human body and movement.

My mission in every class:

To help people gain self-awareness, to move better and feel better while enjoying the challenge of Pilates.

My biggest challenge is:

One in particular, reoccurring in Pilates, is keeping my shoulders down. Not just in class but throughout the entire day!

My personal fitness achievement is:

Gaining strength and flexibility through Pilates and becoming a Pilates teacher.

When I’m not at work I am: 

I love to cook, spend time with the grandchildren, and do anything outdoors i.e. gardening, snowshoeing, walking, kayaking.

I have been practicing at Concord Pilates almost since Mara opened the studio. I googled "Pilates studio in Concord NH" and there she was! I've always been very athletic - I run, compete in triathlons, and cross country ski; I have a black belt in karate and competed on the diving and water polo teams in college. I played lacrosse and was on the cross country ski team in high school. I also took ballet as my art requirement in high school (I am not very artistic...) and was first introduced to Pilates there. Pilates is a wonderful complement to my athletic endeavors, and teaching allows me to share that with others. Teaching (and practicing) Pilates is also a nice way to take a mental break from my day job as an attorney. 

 

What motivates me:

My competitive drive to be better than I was yesterday! Being better than yesterday doesn't necessarily mean being faster or physically stronger; it can also mean being mentally stronger and accepting where you are that day and working smarter within those confines. 

My top fitness tip:

Change things up. If you keep doing what you've always done, you will get what you've always gotten.

My fitness inspiration is:

My mom. She turned 60 this year and is in better shape than I am! We do triathlons together - maybe someday I'll beat her! Pilates is one of the ways I'm trying to ensure that I keep going strong and injury-free for many, many years! 

My mission in every class:

To accept where I am that day. Also, to forget for an hour all of the things that are stressing me out! 

My biggest challenge is:

Letting myself take a day off! 

My personal fitness achievement is:

Completing my first Olympic distance triathlon last summer. I am doing my first Half Ironman this September!

When I’m not at work I am: 

Running, biking, swimming, reading, drinking coffee.

I was born and raised in New Hampshire and have been an avid athlete since my youth playing soccer, running track, and skiing. I earned my bachelor's degree in English at the University of New Hampshire and continue to enjoy both reading and writing- they are passions of mine! Pilates is new to me, and I am thrilled to enjoy the experience of learning more and participating in classes. I’ve found that there are so many muscles that I never even knew about that you can engage and strengthen!


What motivates me:

I enjoy being healthy and feeling physically strong is important to me. I also love to try new things.


My top fitness tips:

Be aware of how your body and mind feel. Any little improvement in either is a success!


My fitness inspiration is:

I love seeing the smiles on peoples’ faces when they get out of a Pilates class. You can literally see how good they feel and that’s more of an incentive to work out myself!


My biggest challenge is:

Boredom. I find I often get bored with an on-going routine. Changing things up is never a bad option.


My personal fitness achievement is:

Feeling better about myself. Feeling comfortable in my own skin and owning any and every improvement I make.


When I’m not at work I am: 

Either curled up with a good book or writing in my journal. You can also find me exploring nature with my Corgi or hitting the slopes!
